COOS COUNTY, Ore. – Coos County Jail is expanding for the first time since 2007 with 50 new jail beds and more staff to meet demand.

KEZI 9 News spoke with Captain Kelley Andrews, Administrative Division Commander at the Coos County Sheriff’s Office. Andrews said the corrections department is finishing up training new employees.

“Currently, we have a limit of 48 beds and have had this for the past several years,” Andrews said. “Our facility can hold up to around 215 inmates but has not done so since 2007 and the catastrophic layoffs due to the reduction of the timber payments.”

The additional beds will expand the facility to 98 beds.

Lane County Jail is also adding 50 more beds for inmates, bringing their number of beds to 367.
