SALEM, Ore. – A Coos Bay woman is speaking out nearly 40 years after her sister’s murder was solved.

Janie Landers, 18, disappeared from a facility for people with developmental disabilities in Salem in 1979. Her body was found five days later.

The case went cold. Oregon State Police reopened it in 2015, when Landers’ sister asked them to.

“I knew if I hollered enough somebody would listen at some point, and they all did, they all tried,” said Joyce Hooper, Landers’ sister.

Investigators tested blood on Landers’ clothes, and it matched the DNA of Gerald Dunlap. He was a convicted rapist who died in prison in 2002.

They said he worked at the facility Landers disappeared from until 1983, when he was fired for inappropriate behavior toward women.

If he were still alive, prosecutors said they would charge him with murder.
