EUGENE, Ore. -- In December, the Oregon Department of Transportation will start a two-year construction project on the Delta Highway-Beltline interchange.

The goal is to improve safety and congestion at the interchange. The project will include redesigning ramp loops, adding a bridge to get from northbound Delta Highway to westbound Beltline, and a pedestrian intersection where southbound Delta Highway meets the on-ramp from eastbound Beltline.

Resident Sally Temple said this interchange has been a problem for the 30 years she’s lived near Delta Highway.

“Well, the interchange at Delta, particularly if you’re going west, is terrible. It’s dangerous,” Temple said.

This project will be in five phases with the first phase involving improving the Goodpasture Island Road on-ramp.

Critics said ODOT should be focusing on improving the Beltline because that’s where all the congestion is.

Angela Beers-Seydel said ODOT is aware of the problems on the Beltline, but this project is the first step.

"Beltline is where it backs up the most. We did this because we could. We had the plans in place. We had the funding in place, and it was also a definite need," Beers-Seydel said.
