EUGENE, Ore. -- Residents of a Santa Clara neighborhood have mixed reactions as construction begins on a new multi-million dollar transit station for Lane Transit District.

Neighbors report construction began about two weeks ago, and heavy machinery is now at the site located near River Road between Green Lane and Hunsaker Lane in North Eugene.

The $10 million project aims to relocate the LTD station from its current location on River Road south of Beltline to the new location about a half-mile north.

LTD purchased the land for the new site in 2015 and said it will be safer, have less congestion and operate more efficiently than the old site. The current station is nearly 40 years old and only has three bus bays, but the new one will have six.

According to a newsletter from LTD, construction began in earnest on May 11. Crews will begin prepping the site by clearing topsoil and removing asphalt from previous buildings.

Willow Millage-Kelley, who lives across the street from the site, said she was unaware about the plans for development when she moved into her home a couple years ago.

“I’m not too happy about it because I work NOC shift, so I sleep during the day. My whole future is going to be listening to construction and big, loud noises all day,” Millage-Kelley said.

Delta Construction plans to have work hours between 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. with possible work on Saturdays during the summer.

Nakayda Jacobs, a student at North Eugene High School who lives near the construction site, is looking forward to have a station near her house.

“I really like LTD. And I use it a lot,” Jacobs said. "I think it’s going to be really helpful over here especially on River Road. It’s really loud and I think it’s going to take a really long time, but it will be better when it’s all over.”
