EUGENE, Ore. – The investigation is still ongoing after yesterday's discovery of a dead body in the Amazon Creek natural area.
A group of Churchill High students were walking along the path when they found what appeared to be a body.

The students called police, who believe the cause of death was a suicide.

Alexis Thwaites is a sophomore student at the University of Oregon who often walks or bikes nearby Amazon Creek.
“I’m scared, and I’m sad," Thwaites said. "If I hear it’s a suicide, that’s horrible. I know plenty of people who have experienced that kind of depression and issues, so that’s really scary. And if it’s not, that’s even scarier because it’s right next to my house. You hear a lot about the bike path and the river, so I’m a little scared.”
One couple walking along the bike path said they are currently in Eugene visiting their daughter who lives right next to the creek. They shared their thoughts on the discovery.
“It's a bit disturbing to know that something like that can happen this close to where she lives. Disturbing is the word we would use,” John said.
The Eugene Police Department said they are still awaiting further information from the Lane County Medical Examiner's Office.
