EUGENE, Ore. – Reactions are mixed from community members on the University of Oregon's plans to renovate Hayward Field.

The school announced the plans Tuesday in private event, with university officials saying they want to set a new standard for sports venues with the stadium.

Although the plans are exciting for some, they have also created concerns for neighbors nearby.

"I hope that they will consider parking for those events, because there isn't parking for those events especially for those kinds of numbers,” Diane Mccully said. “We will have people parking clear up by our house and walking down. So parking will be an issue."

KEZI spoke to an employee at Sweet Life Petite just a block away from the field. She believes the new renovation will be beneficial for her business.

“I think it's going to be great in the long run, we always get hit with a lot of business when there's events going on,” Ren Odabashian said. “It may slow things down a little bit with the construction but I think there's going to be plenty of people working. So we're going to continue having people around to come in. I’m not really too worried about it."

Construction is expected to begin in June 2018 and will wrap up in spring 2020.

Vin Lananna, the associate athletic director at the university, hopes the renovations will continue the tradition at historic Hayward Field.

"Track and field at the University of Oregon is really at the heart and the soul of the university," he said. "I think this new facility does continues to perpetuate that and it allows our next generation to create a new level of history."

Lananna said they will not have any home track meets in the 2019 season on the field, and events like the Prefontaine Classic will not be held there during construction.
