EUGENE, Ore. -- The Student Success Act passed in the Oregon Senate on Monday, and many community members say they're excited about the bill, which would increase funding for schools by $2 billion over two years.

However, before it can go into effect, the bill still needs to be signed by Gov. Kate Brown.

Many parents said they hope the increased funding helps reach all students.

"It's a great idea, and I'm glad our state legislature pulled it off," said Robert Foltz, who has a student at Sheldon High School.

Oregon Rep. Julie Fahey said part of the $1 billion per year included in the bill will be allocated directly to school districts. Fahey said the money would be used for specific purposes to make sure it will impact student learning.

Fahey said if the governor signs the bill, schools might not start to see the impact until the 2020-21 school year.

The Senate passed the bill just days after thousands of teachers all across the state walked out and voiced their concerns about school funding on May 8.

"It is saying we all understand now is the time to fund schools," said Anne Goff, the President of the Springfield Education Association.
