EUGENE, Ore. -- A fire broke out in a storage unit in the 500 block of Commercial Street Thursday evening.
The Eugene-Springfield Fire Department received a 911 call around 6:15 p.m. of flames and smoke pouring out of a building that houses Noble Estate Winery.
A second structure inside the building initially posed a challenge to firefighters to knock down the blaze. However, they were still able to control the fire in 30 minutes.
Witness Alaina Smedstad said smoke from the fire could be seen from Target.
“We were over at Target, and we stopped by to get something, and we just saw one of the warehouses over here that had a bunch of smoke and we saw flames too,” Smedstad said.
The building sustained no major damage but fire officials say since it was made out of metal, the heat caused portions of the structure to expand that will eventually need to be replaced.
Damage is estimated to be $175,000.
There was no one inside in the building at the start of the fire.
Fire officials said it was an electrical fire and contributing factors included unpermitted construction work and use of temporary wiring.
