REEDSPORT, Ore. – A 35-foot fishing boat sank overnight in Scholfield Creek in Reedsport, a U.S. Coast Guard spokesman said.
A sheen of fuel is being seen in the water around the fishing trawler, and Coast Guard pollution responders are on scene, said Petty Officer Steve Strohmaier of U.S. Coast Guard District Headquarters in Seattle.
“They will analyze it and will notify EPA for further response if it is serious enough,” he said. The quantity of diesel fuel on board the boat is unknown, he said. The National Response Center, which is part of the Environmental Protection Agency, has been informed of the incident.
No injuries have been reported, and there have also been no reports of marine deaths or environmental hazards, he said.
The boat was discovered Friday morning and apparently sank overnight, Strohmaier said. The boat is visible just north of the Highway 101 bridge at Winchester Avenue in Reedsport.
