ASTORIA, Ore. -- The Coast Guard in Astoria seized a large amount of cocaine during patrols off the coast of Mexico and Central America.

They said they seized nearly 12,000 pounds of cocaine with a street value of more than $180 million.

The crew of the Coast Guard Cutter Steadfast returned to Astoria the day before Christmas after 50 days. They said while they patrolled international waters off the coasts of Mexico and Central America, they intercepted five vessels, suspected of illegally smuggling drugs.

"I couldn't be more proud of the hard work and dedication of my crew, and the men and women of the interagency aircrews and support networks ashore," said Cmdr. Alain Balmaceda, Steadfast's commanding officer. "Their teamwork was vital to successfully combating transnational organized crime in drug trafficking zones over the past several months."

They said knowing they stopped tons of drugs from reaching America's shores made the deployment over the holidays even more rewarding.
