ROSEBURG, Ore. -- Earlier this year, the City of Roseburg pulled their contract with the Roseburg Chamber of Commerce, which has been managing the city’s visitor center for several years.

The visitor center has been serving Roseburg for more than 20 years. City officials said they were paying the Chamber of Commerce more than $500,000 to help with tourism efforts in the area.

The last contract started in July 2013 with the option to renew.

However, city officials said they wanted to take a different direction with their tourism and destination services. When they made the decision not to renew, city officials said it may have caused tension between the two.

“There seems to be a lot of history to it,” Roseburg City Manager Nikki Messenger said. “I haven’t dived that deep into what caused that, 'cause that’s not important to me. What’s important is what’s moving forward and how we can work better together.”

In the spring, four groups put in bids to take over the contract for Roseburg’s tourism and destination services. City officials said the Chamber of Commerce were one of those groups, but the Roseburg City Council went with someone else.

City officials said they went with ANVIL, a Roseburg-based marketing firm. They said they have signed a three-year contract with the company and will be paying them more than $450,000 a year.

Right now, officials said they are working create a new visitor center that aligns with the new marketing plan.

KEZI 9 News reached out to the Chamber of Commerce, but they were unavailable for comment.

However, the current visitor center is still open to the public, but it is not financially supported by the City of Roseburg.
