EUGENE, Ore. -- The City of Eugene hosted an open house for people to walk through and look at the downtown riverfront property to get a better understanding of the city’s redevelopment plans.
Hundreds of people made their way to the EWEB Headquarters Wednesday night to learn more about the nearly 16 aces of riverfront property the city bought from EWEB last April.
During the open house guest were able to tour the boundaries where the park and plaza area will be. The open house also allowed people to hear from Williams/Dame & Associates and SERA Architects as well as city staff about other aspects of the project like proposed city investments, and affordable housing.
Brian Richardson, the public affairs manager with Eugene Public Works, said the space will consist of a four-acre park, housing, a hotel, retail stores and restaurants, and will also reuse the iconic steam plant.
Richardson said the open house helped the community get a better grasp on what's to come.
“They can actually walk to get an idea, a sense, a feel of what it’s going to look like here in just a few short years,” Richardson said. “When you get out here and you see the vast open space the back drop whether it be the river, whether it be the viaduct, you can see all of this and get a really good sense and feeling of where things are going to lay out."
Richardson said the city hopes to have the park and plaza done by 2021, and construction could start as soon as next year.
If you didn’t make it to the open house on Wednesday, the city is having a public hearing on the riverfront property on June 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Harris Hall.
