EUGENE, Ore. -- Chronic pain patients gathered outside the Lane County Public Health building in downtown Eugene on Wednesday, protesting opioid restrictions that they say keep them from living their lives.

The "Don't Punish Pain" rally was scheduled to go from noon to 2 p.m. at 151 W. 7th Ave.

The protesters say the regulations make them feel discriminated against. They said the strict Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines make it hard for them to obtain the pain pills they need to do day-to-day tasks.

The CDC's regulations encourage alternative methods for pain management to try to curb opioid addictions but protesters say those methods come with their own set of challenges.

"Yes there's other things, but sometimes they just don't do it and taking a pain medication gives you some relief," Gina Buehler said.

Protesters say the alternative methods also come with financial challenges.

"I can't afford acupuncture, I can't afford massage therapy, so those are some of the anti-opiate ways that they want to go, and for some people it's impossible," said Amy Hays, rally organizer.
