EUGENE, Ore. -- The Campbell Community Center near downtown Eugene has kicked off its renovations.

The event, which coincided with the annual ice cream social, started a yearlong construction project that will add a health and wellness center, a new lobby, and more space for special programing. Darla Whitsett, who is a regular at the community center, said she can’t wait to see the finished product.

“Since so many people come now and our numbers are growing exponentially, I look forward to seeing what happens,” Whitsett said.

The Campbell Community Center welcomes 250 to 300 people a day and with more people visiting, the city asked voters to approve money for the expansion. In May 2018, Eugene voters did just that and approved $39 million in bonds and $3 million in levies.

Campbell Community Center manager Diana Sconce said the public will notice a difference.

“I think the public reaction is going to just hopefully be a huge wow factor,” Sconce said.

The Campbell Community Center will remain open during construction.
