EUGENE, Ore. -- Lane County Public Health officials reported an outbreak at a long-term care facility in Eugene on Monday.

A total of 18 people have tested positive for COVID-19 at Evergreen Memory Care, 3720 N. Clarey St. Of those cases, 12 are residents and six are staff members.

Jason Davis with public health said the facility has been following all the safety guidelines and protocols.

"This isn't a situation where there is anyone to blame. We're dealing with an invisible virus that is very hard to contain," Davis said.

Davis said this specific facility's patients require a lot of help and close contact, and with some people being asymptomatic, it is close to impossible to avoid any transmission.

Officials with Evergreen Memory Care said in a statement that the first employee to show mild symptoms quarantined and was tested. When the first and second tests came back positive, Evergreen notified residents, families and team members. Testing was conducted for all staff and residents, leading to the discovery of the other cases. More test results are pending.

Below are precautions Evergreen officials said they are taking to limit exposure:

  • Team members are furnished with personal protective equipment (PPE) to be worn at all times.
  • All residents are currently asked to stay inside their apartments for the time being.
  • All residents are being served meals in their apartments and with disposable dishes and cutlery.
  • All residents are being monitored each shift for possible symptoms of illness.
  • Prior to these positive tests, increased disinfection and infection control measures were in place as well as social/physical distancing measures.
  • All team members are participating in ongoing infection control procedures training.
  • Professional disinfection of the community will be done this week.

“We are heartened by the tremendous spirit we’ve seen displayed by our residents, team members, and our residents’ families, as we’ve all responded to this unprecedented situation,” the statement said.
