SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – A COVID-19 case at a Springfield elementary school has put a wrench in plans to bring some students back into the classroom on Monday.

Springfield Public Schools officials on Friday confirmed there was one case at Mt. Vernon Elementary.

Students in kindergarten and first grade were supposed to start in-person on Monday, but now they will start the year online, officials said. However, they are hoping to be able to have them in the classroom the following Monday.

Under current rules, schools are not allowed to open if there are any cases in the school community as much as 14 days prior to the opening date. However, once the school is open, that rule is no longer in effect, district officials said.
