ELMIRA, Ore. -- A bus carrying Elmira High School baseball players crashed through a fence and into a tree shortly after leaving the high school Monday morning, fire officials said.

The crash happened near Territorial Highway and Demming Road just before 10 a.m. About 30 people were on board at the time, including students from both the varsity and junior varsity teams and their coaches.

Debbie Slinker, who has lived on Demming road for 26 years, said this is not an isolated incident.

"A few years back a stolen car crashed right here a few feet away. It hit a telephone pole, ended upside down, and the suspect ran away," Slinker said.

However, Chief Terry Ney with Lane Fire Authority said he sees no reason why this should be a dangerous road.

"That stretch is straight for half-a-mile in two directions. I'm not sure why that's a particular problem," Ney said.

The driver and one student were taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, officials said. Six students were checked out on the scene, and one mother took her son to the hospital for concussion symptoms. Officials said four are being monitored.

Fern Ridge School District Superintendent Gary Carpenter said the bus had just left the school and was stopping by a student's house to pick up a student or equipment. They were back on Demming Road when the tires on the side of the bus opposite the driver went off the road. When the bus went back on the road, the driver over corrected. The bus went over a ditch, hit a fence and then drove into a tree.

Blachly-Lane Power was on scene examining a power pole. Power was turned off for a little more than an hour while they secured the area. The road is closed at Arnold Lane. Residents are being allowed through, but others should avoid the area.

The baseball game at Hidden Valley High School has been canceled.

KEZI reached out to Fern Ridge School District about the condition of those in the hospital and has not heard back at this time.
