YONCALLA, Ore.— The Elkhead fire and Hayhurst fire have been contained, according to officials form the Douglas Forest Protective Association.
The Hayhurst Road Fire burned about three miles west of Yoncalla, while the Elkhead Road Fire burned five miles east of Rice Hill.
The Hayhurst fire was estimated to be 50 acres and the Elkhead fire was estimated to be 17 acres.
Fire prevention specialist Kyle Reed said the fires could have been caused by dry weather and leftover logging debris. He said both fires broke out in areas that were recently logged where workers may have been burning lumber to prevent hazards. He said the hot weather could have reignited old burn piles.
With the weather getting warmer, Reed is encouraging people to avoid controlled burning for now.
“Part of that is due to the conditions we’re seeing right now, the fuels are drier than they typically are this time of year,” said Reed.
Reed said crews will be monitoring and mopping up the area for the next few days. Smoke could be visible as crews work to complete the task.
