Booster shots now open to all adults, but getting an appointment may be difficult

Some local people said finding an appointment was harder than they expected.

LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- COVID-19 boosters can now go into the arms of all adults across the country, and people in Lane County say they're ready to line up.

However, finding an appointment is a little harder than expected. Eugene resident Kevin Coad said he was ready to get the COVID-19 booster shot weeks ago.

"I would have loved to have gotten it; I've been wanting it. My doctor wouldn't allow it because of the CDC guidelines: I'm only 64," Coad said.

But when he looked for an open appointment on Monday, he couldn't find one.

"As soon as CDC announced it was for everyone, I went for it, but not available," Coad said.

Coad isn't the only person having trouble; Jackie Morris, a Crow resident, said she'd been looking for an open appointment for several days and was finally able to get an appointment set up through a local pharmacy.

"People in my age group, and I have diabetes, so I have underlying, really need to get that booster," Morris said. "I could not find an appointment anywhere and then I finally got one on Nov. 30, and there was one time left so I think it was a cancellation."

But why is this happening? Anne Marie Levis, a spokesperson for Lane County Public Health, said the reason appointments can't be made until next week is because pediatric vaccines were their first priority.

"It's an awkward week with already having vaccine clinics scheduled with kids throughout the community. And there is the holiday this week so we're looking at what can be done for next week," Levis said.

She said people can start scheduling to get the Moderna vaccine on Nov. 24, and appointments start next week. The reason LCPH is only scheduling for Moderna boosters is because of demand.

There is no set timeline for when Pfizer and Johnson & Johnson vaccines will be available. But you can get your booster through other avenues. Coad said he used a different method than going through the county.

"I went to my doctor's website and made an appointment," he said.
