Friedrich was reported missing on June 8, and officials located and interviewed someone who had seen a kayak floating upside down in the lake a couple of days prior. Maine officials said they tracked the kayak to Friedrich and found his vehicle at the Swanville Boat launch.

He’d last been in contact with family on June 5.

According to loved ones, he was in Maine as a part of a cross country journey to spread his father's ashes in a few of his favorite locations, and he'd been gone for weeks.
