Corvallis, Ore. -- KEZI 9 Sports' Blitzing the Preseason series brought to you by Bi-Mart continues tonight up north in Benton County, where some 5A changes mean that every game means a little bit more for the Corvallis high school Spartans.
"Any game you're particularly excited for?" asks KEZI 9 Sports.
"Getting back to the West Albany game because that used to be a big rivalry for us and now it is again," answers Logan Steeves.
Corvallis High School gets to play some new teams in 5A, but ones who are old rivals. 5A's recongifguration meant the Spartans would have no non-league games, but Coach Chris McGowan says it doesn't change their preparation.
"I don't think it does really," says McGowan. "I mean we have a couple new schemes we have to prepare for but it's all football. We'll jsut work on us."
"We're gonna compete just like we always do," Steeves, the starting quarterback, explains. "We got some new teams this year so we're gonna watch a lot of film, figure em out and then go out and compete."
The goal is to make the playoffs and have a winning season, and players are looking to step up after the departure of a big senior class.
"I think our upperclassmen are super tight because we got a pretty small group that's been together that's been through all four years so been doing pretty good," says Steeves of the chemistry on this Corvallis team. "Been trying to incorporate the young guys but hopefully we're looking pretty good."
But despite this small group of seniors, McGowan is looking forward to see them lead in 2018.
"I think at each position group we have a chance to be as good or better," McGowan says. "We had Roy Williams last year who was a great all purpose guy but we got a couple of guys that can fill that spot so potentially be more productive there. I'm excited to see how Logan Steeves does at quarterback and he's a senior and this will be his first chance to take it over."
And as old rivalries reignite in 5A, Corvallis football is excited to maybe turn some heads this year, in their league and beyond.
KEZI 9 Sports' Blitzing the Preseason continues on Wednesday, August 15th with North Eugene High School.
