EUGENE, Ore. – The University of Oregon announced Wednesday their choice for next provost: biology professor Patrick Phillips.

President Michael Schill said they launched an accelerated internal search to fill the position with hopes of maintaining momentum.
Phillips will be taking over July 1 after current provost Jayanth Banavar steps down. Banavar announced his plans earlier this year, but did not provide a reason.

Schill said Phillips, who will also be senior vice president, has “nearly two decades of distinguished service.” He’s led multiple administrative and research efforts and has been responsible for new construction on campus and establishing new policies.

As provost, Phillips will set academic priorities for the university and manage resources to support those priories.

In a statement, Schill thanked the search committee. To read the full statement, click here.
