EUGENE, Ore. -- With many schools back in session, students are riding their bikes and police want drivers, pedestrians and bicyclist to share the road.

Debbie Janeck of the Eugene Police Department’s Crime Prevention unit said parents can work with their children to make sure they get to and from school safely on their bike.

She recommends parents practice the route their kids will take to school with their children and help them identify possible hazards.
Janeck said cyclist need to ride on the right side of the road and use hand signals before making turns.

She is also asking cyclists to not use their phones or listen to music while they ride.

Nancy Lang, a driver in Eugene, said she had a close call with a cyclist Monday morning and is asking both drivers and bicyclists to pay attention.

“Probably a college student, against a dark background with dark clothing and riding a dark bike shot right in front me,” Lang said. “I stopped, and she didn't even know I was there.”

Janeck said cyclists should stay visible by wearing bright colors. For kids under the age of 16, helmets are required, but Janeck said it's something every cyclist should use.
