DORENA, Ore. -- An algae advisory has some people shying away from Dorena Reservoir, but others aren't as worried.

The Oregon Health Authority issued a health advisory for Dorena Reservoir on Wednesday, saying people and their pets should avoid swimming in areas where there are algae blooms. They said activities like canoeing and boating at a lower speed are fine.

The biggest warning from the state is that no one should drink water directly from the reservoir. They said Cottage Grove's drinking water is completely safe.

People visiting the reservoir said this type of advisory is nothing new to the area, but it was issued earlier than normal.

"This is earlier, and the lake is really low...so maybe that's contributing," said Erika Marion, who's visiting Dorena from Salem.

Marion has been making the drive from Salem to Dorena for 15 years; she said camping at Baker Bay is a family tradition. This year, it was also a way to escape the water problems in Salem: "We thought it's OK we're going to go camping and have nice water here...we found out there was an algae break out here."

She said not as worried about this advisory: "Every year they have an algae bloom...we swim down here every year, by the buoys and we've never had any issues."
