ALBANY, Ore. - A man in Albany was hit and killed by a train on Thursday morning, April 12, at the railroad crossing near Davidson St.

Police said the man was allegedly chasing his dog when he was struck.

"It appears the subject was chasing his dog, the dog is also deceased, and subsequent to him trying to catch the dog he was struck by the train," said Lt. Marv Hammersley with the Albany Police Department.

Police have yet to identify the man or determine whether or not he was homeless. They did say they believe he was somewhere in his mid-50s.

Hammersley advises people to be aware and allow extra time if you're attempting to cross railroad tracks. He said he knows sometimes it seems like you have enough time, but keep in mind how much mass a train carries and how long it takes to stop.

"And so a fairly short, 'Oh, I think I can make it.' If you're struck it's probably going to be fatal," said Hammersley.
