EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene School District 4J will be changing the way they’re serving food to students while reducing their carbon footprint at the same time.
Officials from 4J said the school district will no longer work with large food management companies to feed their students.
Instead, they’ll be making all the food in-house. For the last few weeks, 4J staff has been testing recipes and picking which ones they would like to serve to students.
Regional manager Jill Cuados said she’s really excited the district is implementing a program like this.

"This is great. The staff are amazing. We have been looking forward to this for a really long time,” said Cuados. “We all love food for that reason. It's about the food."
On top of the food changes, all 20 elementary schools in the district will be transitioning to reusable silverware.
Officials said the parents and students have been advocating for this for a while and elementary schools have tried to make the change on their own.
Director of Support Services Holly Langan said these initiatives are learning opportunities for the students. She hopes it will teach kids the importance of reducing waste.
"I think it's one of the easiest changes we can make with them. There are a lot of habits that are a little bit more difficult to change,” said Langan. “But switching to this, there will be less going into the garbage and going into landfill. It’s something we can do."
These initiatives are apart of a broader climate change resolution passed by the school district in May 2019.
The resolution is a way for the school district to formally support eco-friendly projects that reduce their carbon footprint.
