EUGENE, Ore. -- Eugene School District 4J held its first of two public forums Wednesday on how the district should spend over $12 million in funding from the Student Success Act.

The community outreach event’s goal was to get public input on what the school district is doing well and where it can improve. That information will help district leaders determine how to invest the money.

The Student Success Act outlines categories in which districts across Oregon must spend their money. These include increasing partnerships, equitable courses, meeting students' behavioral and mental health needs, developing collaborative framework and reducing disparities with student groups.

Christina Howard of Eugene said if the district focuses on the first four categories, the last one will improve on its own.

“If you view it as integrative instead of linear which it was kind of how it was presented as buckets, 4J has an opportunity to present it as an integrate approach and build that into their plan,” Howard said.

The next public forum will be Sept. 26 at 5:30 p.m. at North Eugene High School. There is also an online survey on the 4J website that is open until Sept. 27.
