EUGENE, Ore. – The Eugene School District 4J announced on Tuesday that classes will be online-only for at least the first trimester of the coming school year. Previously, the district had planned to begin some in-person instruction within a few weeks of the beginning of the term.

The announcement, posted on the district’s website, is the latest development as school districts navigate changing state requirements and coronavirus conditions.

For schools to reopen, the COVID-19 positivity rate at the state and county levels needs to be under 5% for three weeks. And each county must have fewer than 10 cases per 100,000 people over a seven-day span also for three weeks.

District officials said the change was largely prompted by the fact that Lane County and the State of Oregon are not meeting those requirements.

Because of the large case count, 4J said classes will remain online through at least Dec. 7. The district will make a decision by mid-November if on-site learning will begin after Dec. 7. If it does, it will be a hybrid approach of online and on-site learning.

Officials said some limited support may be provided on-site for individual students or small groups prior to that date. Teachers will also give instruction from school buildings or remotely. Parents still have the option to choose 100% online learning for the entire school year.

Gov. Kate Brown recently said schools can reopen this fall for in-person classes, if people across the state work to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

Most districts have said the soonest they would return to classrooms is in early November.
