DOUGLAS COUNTY, Ore. -- The Douglas County Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a new phone scam. They said it involves someone pretending to be from their office.

Deputies said the scammer tells people that there is an outstanding warrant for an unpaid debt, missing jury duty, or a minor infraction. They ask the caller to pay off the debt using a debit or credit card, Western Union, or a prepaid Visa card.

Officials said the scammer is spoofing their number, making it appear that it is coming from law enforcement or court offices.

Deputies said they do not give notice via phone calls. They said if you are worried that you owe money or have an outstanding warrant, you should hang up and find the phone number in the local directory.
