EUGENE, Ore. -- This could be the last weekend before hundreds of union workers in Lane County go on strike.

The deadline is October 18. More than 600 union members will walk off the job.

The county said it means community health clinics will close. Appointments would have to be rescheduled for after the strike. Customer service hours may shrink and other county services will be delayed or suspended.

The main sticking point is the size of a pay increase and the amount of money employees would put towards their health insurance.

"The focus for Lane County in that, finding a balance between providing competitive wages and benefits to employees which is important, but also balancing the need to be good stewards of the limited taxpayer resources," said Devon Ashbridge, spokesperson for Lane County.

If a strike does happen, 650 members of the American Federation of State, County, and Municipal employees will walk off the job, including nurses, secretaries and maintenance workers.
