EUGENE, Ore. – Two people are dead after a head-on crash on Highway 99 north of Eugene.

The crash happened around 6:30 p.m. Monday just north of Irving Road.

Oregon State Police said two people in a Prius were in the private driveway of McFarland Cascade Pole and Lumber Company, trying to make a left-hand turn.

When they went to make that turn, they pulled out in front of a Ford Explorer that was traveling north on Highway 99, killing both people in the Prius.

OSP Sgt. Elijah Chambers said this is still an ongoing investigation.

"Right now, we are just beginning the investigation," Chambers said. "We do not have any indiciators as to why the one car turned in front of the other. We're trying to identify who the driver and passenger of that vehicle are. When we have identification, we will be making notifications."

The woman and kid in the Ford Explorer were both transported to the hospital, but Chambers said the kid is in stable condition.

Highway 99 re-opened around 9:15 p.m. on Monday.

Part of the highway is closed between Irving and Enid roads. Drivers are being asked to avoid the area.
