A felony animal cruelty investigation is underway in Colbert County. According to animal control officers, a mutilated dog was found near a bridge in the far eastern part of the county off of River Road.

Investigators say the dog had its ears and testicles cut off. It was also skinned.

"I've been doing this for seven years and this is probably one of the worst things I have ever seen," said Officer Anthony Wilbanks with the Colbert County Animal Control.

The dog was found by a fisherman on Tuesday afternoon.

"Tossed him out like garbage, he was just laying there. It takes rigor mortis about three hours to set in on a 30-pound dog, and this dog was still fresh. So it had been done recently," said Wilbanks.

Officer Willbanks said this is not the first time animal remains have been found under the bridge. He said whoever is doing it needs to be stopped.

Colbert County animal control said this crime reaches the status of a felony. They are asking for the public's help in trying to identify who may have done this. Anyone with information can call or text the Shoals Area Crime Stoppers tip line.
