EUGENE, Ore. -- Wearing masks during the pandemic may be an important precaution, but it can also be a pimply pain for plenty of people who are experiencing "maskne."

Oregon Medical Group dermatologist Dr. Rie Takahashi said that many of her patients have maskne on the mind, complaining of extra facial irritation under the two-thirds of their face that are covered by a mask.

"I would say almost 100% of patients mention it during their visits," she said. "People do get ulcers and wounds on their nose because of the rubbing."

If facial mask friction is causing you pain, Takahashi recommends first taking a second look at your mask to make sure it's fitting comfortably around the bridge of your nose. Finding time to safely take a short break from wearing the mask throughout the day may also help.

"It just gives you a better overall mental well-being anyways to be freed from the mask-wearing. I think it will free your skin as well," she said.

Some people also experience oily skin and clogged pores under their masks. For that, Takahashi said that making sure you clean or dispose of your mask at least once a week can save you some sores and pimples.

Adding a gentle facial cleanser to your skincare routine can also be helpful. Anything from bar soap to name-brand products can do the trick.

"It's really anything that's been working for you. So there's no need to change anything, ramp up or complicate things. it's anything that fits into your daily lifestyle," said Takahashi.

A moisturizer can be another beneficial addition to your routines, but make sure that whatever product you use is labeled "noncomedogenic." Otherwise, it may simply make your acne worse.
