EUGENE, Ore. -- The trade wars with China are having a big impact on recycling in Oregon, and it’s forcing one store in Eugene to cut back its hours.

NextStep Recycling said their processors are passing along their increased costs to the store.

NextStep takes donations of obsolete electronics and relies on scrap prices to keep them afloat. But their income has gone down by 25 percent in the last few weeks.

“Scrap prices go up and down,” Executive Director Roy Nelson said. “Scrap we collect here accounts for 39 percent of our revenue, and we just ride that. Usually the changes, you can kinda see them coming. However, this time it came on really fast.”

Store officials said they’re reducing their hours for the winter, and they’re hoping the recycling markets will right themselves by spring.

The store will now be open Tuesday through Saturday 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

You can still drop off any unused or unwanted electronics between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
