Lane County changes recycling rules for construction materials

This affects the Glenwood Transfer Station and Short Mountain Landfill.

LANE COUNTY, Ore. -- Starting July 1, two Lane County facilities will no longer accept loads of construction and demolition materials over six cubic yards until they have been sorted for recycling.

The change affects the Glenwood Transfer Station and Short Mountain Landfill and applies to wood, metal, carboard, concrete and brush.

“C and D materials are very heavy, and we do have a goal of reaching 63 percent recovery by the year 2025, so this will help,” said Sarah Grimm, a waste reduction specialist. “The environmental impacts of these materials are great in their manufacturing and when we can get them reused and recycled, it’s great for the whole community.”

Lane County hopes the change will help the facilities better comply with state recycling regulations and that an increase in recycling will also increase the lifespan of the landfill while reducing the demand for new resources.

BRING Recycling will be on hand to help with sorting. Residents can also take the materials to a facility like EcoSort at 235 E. 17th Avenue, or McKenzie Recyclingat 110 N. Cleveland Street.
