EUGENE, Ore -- Tried and true plants are a safe bet in your garden, but maybe it's time to go outside the box with plants that have the "wow" factor.

Caleb Johnson, owner of Johnson Brothers Garden Market, rounded up nine plants that are weird, wild and unusual.

"I always feel like going into summer, it's kind of fun to mix it up a bit. Get something different instead of the tried and true," Johnson said.

And something different that kids will enjoy are carnivorous plants like the Pitcher Plant and Sarrencia.

The third plant Johnson recommended is the Safflower, which is tall and skinny and puts on lots of little bright-colored orange blossoms all summer.

Number four on Johnson's list -- garbanzo beans.

Coming in at number five are Rex Begonias.

"There are lots of them out there,  but we have some new interesting colors. Here's a really dark one. This one has multiple colors in it. So fun," Johnson added.

Rounding out the top nine list are the Aeonium, Polar Berry and the Mina Lobata Jungle vine.

"This one is an Aeonium. It's a succulent.  This one has been trained up and trimmed up so it has a cool trunk. You can see it's extra large. It's bigger than my hand," Johnson said.

Johnson Brothers Garden Market is located at 91444 Coburg Road in Eugene.
