EUGENE, Ore. -- Summer is winding down, and one plant can give your all the shades of fall -- red, purple, green, and yellow.
In this week's In The Garden, Caleb Johnson, owner of Johnson Brothers Garden Market, showcased the ever-popular Heuchera plant, also known as Coral Bells. Johnson said there are several reasons why Heucheras are one of his favorite plants.
"One is you can see the range of color and I don't even have all the different colors. They are low growing. They are evergreen. They are deer resistant. They set up little flowers that attract hummingbirds and bees for part of the year. And so overall, they are just a fun, easy-care, low-maintenance plant you can mix in the garden," Johnson said.
Heucheras prefer shade, although they can handle a fair amount of sun. They also work well as a border because they are low growing.
"You can also mix them in between other plants you've planted because you can see the contrasting colors can really brighten up a shady spot. And then they also really look good in hanging baskets, containers mixed with other plants, for like a fall container," Johnson said.
Johnson Brothers Garden Market is located at 91444 Coburg Road in Eugene.
