EUGENE, Ore. - Oregon's U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley announced Thursday that he plans to introduce the "BUILD" Act.

It's part of an effort to better invest in Career and Technical Education.

The senator was joined by the Springfield Public Schools superintendent during a town hall meeting at Lane Community College.

"BUILD", which stands for Building Understanding, Investment, Learning, and Direction, would provide grants to support state efforts to restart CTE programs in middle and high schools.

"There is great joy people have in making things," said Sen. Merkley, "that is a joy that brings students into continuing and staying in school."

The Build Career and Technical Education act of 2018 would provide $20 million in new federal funding.

That money will establish a two-year pilot grant program supporting career and technical education exploration programs.
