MEDFORD, Ore. (KDRV) - Wednesday's mass school shooting in Florida is bringing the debate over gun control back to the forefront of the nation.

President Donald Trump promised to focus on mental health and said he supports efforts to improve the federal background check system.

One Medford gun shop owner said Oregon's system is more advanced than other states by checking mental health and DMV records.

The Ashland Indivisible chapter demands Representative Greg Walden take action on gun control bills. One member said she's disappointed in Walden's voting history to loosen restrictions on background checks.

Congressman Greg Walden said he recently supported legislation that would require bi-annual reviews to prevent firearms from going into the wrong hands.

"We know in several of these instances, had the data been shared, people would've been denied the guns that they bought," said Rep. Walden. "There is more work that needs to be done there and the senate needs to pass the bill we sent them."
